unraveling ravel

objective: to form a grid-based relief with paper utilizing manipulation and geometry, while repeating a theme that highlights a single anomaly. in the spirit of repetition, i was inspired by maurice ravel's boléro. the music repeats the same intersecting melodies over and over, the only anomaly of the composition being the gradual crescendo throughout, leading to a great cacophony of sound at the finish. the abnormality is the entirety of the piece simply repeating itself, making the focal point the entire architecture all at once.

a first glance: as the anomaly of the work is the entire work itself, it proves useful to intake the whole from the beginning. the story told is linear in order, beginning with a single thread working its way into the repetition of the piece.

a closer look: these close-ups tell the viewer a story of the growing intensity of the repeated grid.

another close: as the piece progresses, the volume grows with the progression.

a second anomaly: with the conclusion of the piece approaching, another anomaly is introduced: color made with burning.

the last piece: more intense than any preceding parts, the last piece explodes with sound and emotion.

a side view: the relief structure is pictured hanging from a wall.

a final look: this work truly unravels ravel's piece. the thread loses all logic or reason as the chaos grows, all the while a structure remains. there is an order to the chaos.
